4 Things I Wish I'd Known About Executive Coaches Before Hiring One
July 03, 2023

Pioneering your way through the corporate labyrinth demands enhanced skills, cultivated talent, and a voracious appetite for learning and growth. Often, a guide can be of immense help in this journey. This guide is none other than an Executive Coach. From the perspective of a Harvard alumnus, I wish to share four critical insights I wish I had known before hiring my first executive coach.

The first point of consideration revolves around the importance of accreditation. While the coaching industry remains unregulated, international bodies like the International Coach Federation (ICF) provide credentials that ensure a certain level of quality and professionalism. Prior to hiring an executive coach, I was unaware of the significance of ICF accreditation. The absence of this scrutiny led me to an executive coach who, despite having a string of successful clients, could not offer me the level of professional practice an ICF-accredited coach could have.

The second crucial insight pertains to the concept of coaching methodology. It was only after a few sessions that I realized how a coach's methodology shapes the entire coaching process. Different coaches employ different techniques, ranging from Gestalt to solutions-focused, cognitive-behavioral, and more. Each approach has its pros and cons, and finding a coach whose methodology aligns with your personal style can significantly impact your coaching experience. For instance, if you are a data-driven individual, a coach who relies heavily on intuition may not be the best fit for you.

The third point refers to the 'chemistry' between the coach and the coachee. The bond between an executive coach and the client is pivotal. The importance of this bond was significantly underrated in my initial assessment, leading me to underestimate its impact. The coaching relationship thrives on mutual trust, respect and the ability to communicate openly and honestly. A lack of chemistry can hinder this interaction, therefore, it is crucial to ensure a 'chemistry' check before finalizing an executive coach.

The fourth point, which is indeed an amalgamation of the first three, deals with the cost and return on investment (ROI). The financial commitment involved in hiring an executive coach is significant. However, simply looking at the cost is not enough. It's essential to evaluate the potential ROI, not just in terms of monetary gains, but also in terms of the value it brings to your professional growth and advancement. Prior to realizing this, I was left dissatisfied with the coaching I received, as I had not properly assessed the potential value against the cost.

Reflecting back on my initial journey with an executive coach, I realize how these four aspects could have significantly enhanced my coaching experience. The importance of accreditation, methodology, chemistry, and understanding of ROI are now factors I deeply consider before entering into a coaching agreement.

While all these points are pivotal in making an informed decision, the most critical element is, undoubtedly, the self-awareness and readiness of the individual seeking coaching. As Aristotle once said, "Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom". Therefore, taking the time to introspect and understand what you require from an executive coach is the stepping stone to a fruitful coaching experience.

In conclusion, just as the Pythagorean theorem isn't merely a calculation of the length of the hypotenuse but a revelation of spatial relationship, hiring an executive coach isn't just about getting advice. It's about embarking on a journey of self-discovery, growth, and transformation – a journey made more fruitful by understanding the intricacies of the coaching process and what you can do to maximize the benefits.
